What's been studied
Single-ingredient research, small studies, mixed results. We show it. We don't sell it. MODE³ works as a cue: same scent, same moment, same action.
Rosemary
144 adults did a memory and attention test battery in a room with rosemary aroma, lavender aroma or no aroma. Each person was tested once, in one condition.
With rosemary, the quality of memory was better overall and people felt more alert. Memory speed was slower.
Moss et al., 2003. International Journal of Neuroscience. doi:10.1080/00207450390161903
Peppermint and ylang ylang
144 adults did the same kind of test battery with peppermint aroma, ylang ylang aroma or no aroma. Each person was tested once, in one condition.
Peppermint: better memory and more alertness. Ylang ylang: calmer, but lower alertness, poorer memory and slower processing.
Moss et al., 2008. International Journal of Neuroscience. doi:10.1080/00207450601042094
Lemon
56 healthy adults smelled lemon, lavender or water, one scent per session.
Lemon lifted self-reported mood. Cortisol, heart rate, blood pressure, the measured cytokines and pain did not improve. Two other measures differed, so there was no broad, consistent physical benefit.
Kiecolt-Glaser et al., 2008. Psychoneuroendocrinology. doi:10.1016/j.psyneuen.2007.11.015
Bergamot
41 healthy women rested for 15 minutes, with or without bergamot vapour.
Some mood and heart rate variability measures were better with bergamot. Cortisol was not better in every comparison.
Watanabe et al., 2015. Complementary Medicine Research (Forschende Komplementärmedizin). doi:10.1159/000380989
Lavender
31 young healthy sleepers spent nights in a sleep lab, with lavender or water vapour intermittently over 30 minutes at the start of the night (the first two minutes of every ten).
Deep sleep went up with lavender. The effects differed between men and women.
Goel et al., 2005. Chronobiology International. doi:10.1080/07420520500263276
Peppermint and exercise
40 athletes did running, strength and skill tasks with and without peppermint odour.
Some physical tasks improved with peppermint. The skill task (free throws) did not.
Raudenbush et al., 2001. Journal of Sport and Exercise Psychology. doi:10.1123/jsep.23.2.156
Menthol (in peppermint)
A lab study in cells and nerve tissue, not in people.
It found the receptor that makes menthol feel cool (TRPM8). That is all it shows: a cooling feeling.
McKemy et al., 2002. Nature. doi:10.1038/nature719
